The
Money Advice Unit offer free specialist advice for anyone
who finds themselves having financial difficulties.
The
Money Advice Unit is made up of both paid staff, who are funded by
the Legal Services Commission, and also Financial Inclusion workers.
Occasionally we may have trained volunteers who have expressed an
interest in giving Money Advice.
How we can help
We aim to stabilise your
situation and at the same time enable you to successfully
manage your finances in the future. In doing this we
would assist you throughout the debt process, negotiating a
wide range of priority and non-priority debt repayments,
providing county court representation, maximising income,
completing court forms, applying for charitable assistance.
How to be referred to us
In order to be referred to the Money
Advice Unit you will need to be seen through the generalist
advice service of the CAB first where you will need to
provide the following:

Proof of your income
e.g. Recent payslips, benefit books, bank
statements, income from pensions and any other income.
·
Copies of
any credit agreements for loans, credit cards, catalogues,
HP etc.
·
Up-to-date
bank and credit statements.
·
Details of
your usual living expenses, including all household
expenses. e.g. gas, electricity, water rates, Council Tax
etc.
·
EITHER:
Rent book/tenancy agreement
OR: Details of mortgage and any
second mortgage/secured loan
·
Any other
financial commitments you may have.
·
Any letters
you may have received from creditors demanding payment.
We would advise the following until you have your
first appointment with your debt adviser:
1.
Do not make any further
purchases on credit cards, store cards or catalogues.
2.
Do not seek to obtain further
credit.
3.
Do not take out a
loan to pay off other debts
(also known as a consolidating loan. It costs alot
more).
