Who we are

There are many reasons why we face financial difficulties in life.  One of them is if we lose our employment.  In this instance we are faced with far less money coming in to the household and in some cases, have to totally rely upon state benefits, however, our usual household outgoings will remain the same or even increase.

The Money Advice Unit offer free specialist advice for anyone who finds themselves having financial difficulties.

The Money Advice Unit is made up of both paid staff, who are funded by the Legal Services Commission, and also Financial Inclusion workers.  Occasionally we may have trained volunteers who have expressed an interest in giving Money Advice.

How we can help

We aim to stabilise your situation and at the same time enable you to successfully manage your finances in the future.  In doing this we would assist you throughout the debt process, negotiating a wide range of priority and non-priority debt repayments, providing county court representation, maximising income, completing court forms, applying for charitable assistance.

How to be referred to us

In order to be referred to the Money Advice Unit you will need to be seen through the generalist advice service of the CAB first where you will need to provide the following:

·         Proof of your income e.g. Recent payslips, benefit books, bank statements, income from pensions and any other income.

·         Copies of any credit agreements for loans, credit cards, catalogues, HP etc.

·         Up-to-date bank and credit statements.

·         Details of your usual living expenses, including all household expenses. e.g. gas, electricity, water rates, Council Tax etc.

·         EITHER: Rent book/tenancy agreement
OR: Details of mortgage and any second mortgage/secured loan

·         Any other financial commitments you may have.

·         Any letters you may have received from creditors demanding payment.

We would advise the following until you have your first appointment with your debt adviser:

1.      Do not make any further purchases on credit cards, store cards or catalogues.

2.      Do not seek to obtain further credit.

3.      Do not take out a loan to pay off other debts (also known as a consolidating loan.  It costs alot more).
